Why can’t our Hair Care Products have it all….

Cleaner Ingredients, Eco-friendly Packaging and be great for our Hair?

Along with many clients, I’ve been asking this for some time. The new line SOURCE ESSENTIELLE from L’Oreal Professionnel is the best blending of these goals that I’ve seen to date. I knew I wanted to offer this line as soon as I heard about it.

L’Oreal reinvented their formula to replace the synthetic surfactants with gentle cleansing agents of natural origin like coconut, corn or rapeseed. Products are free of sulfate, parabens, and silicones and are vegan. Sesame, Argon and Sunflower oils plus Calendula, Jasmine, Lavender, Chamomile and Acacia botanicals are key components to products developed to meet the needs of dry, color-treated or normal hair and sensitive scalps. The botanicals also provide a pleasant, nuanced scent. Each shampoo and conditioner is formulated with 80-99% of naturally-derived ingredients all clearly listed on the product label. The remaining percentage of the formula ensures product stability and performance.

In a packaging first for L’Oreal, there is an in-salon refillable shampoo system to even further reduce plastic waste. I hope all SOURCE ESSENTIELLE users take advantage of this opportunity!

The shampoo packaging design also reduces plastic use. The square-shaped holds maximum product with minimum plastic and as a bonus transportation space is optimized.

SOURCE ESSENTIELLE arrived in March 2019 and is available at Salon Basinger.

The INOA Ammonia Free Hair Color Revolution turns 10

INOA (Innovation NO Ammonia) is revolutionary because it breaks a cardinal rule of color – it does not use ammonia for permanent color or gray coverage. The result is unprecedented comfort on the scalp, zero odor, supreme respect for the hair and amazing hair color power.

I remember the first time I applied INOA. Jill said, “It feels like a mask on my scalp.” There was no odor. The color was a rich chocolate brown. Her hair felt soft and conditioned. And, her scalp did not itch or burn, often the case with conventional ammonia-based hair color.

INOA has…

  • a beautiful range of color
  • core to surface conditioning of the hair
  • intense shine
  • long-lasting resistance to fading
  • no odor or fragrance
  • provides clients with a truly elevated hair color experience

It’s been 10 years since I first used INOA. I’ve used it exclusively as my permanent hair color line almost as long and can’t imagine that changing. And, yes, I’m still Jill’s hair colorist and stylist.

Many thanks to Jill and all of my clients for participating in the INOA Ammonia Free Hair Color revolution. And, thank you every L’Oreal chemists that helped make INOA happen.

Happy Birthday INOA!!!

Shoe Sole Upgrade to Vibram Fun

There’s a great shoe repair shop near the salon – Anthony’s Shoe Service. They are traditional craftsmen with a flair for the modern. In addition to the usual polishing, resoling and repairs, the owner is an official Vibram Cobbler. The wide variety of shoe sole textures, treads and colors that Vibram makes can re-create a pair of shoes or boots.

I recently needed my favorite pair of cognac wingtip boots resoled. I decided to switch it up a bit by going to a Vibram sole – I knew I wanted blue, but I had no idea there could be so many choices. With some patient help from the owner we decided on an eco-sole in marine blue. The result has been great. I think I’ll go for red on the next pair.

As an artist, I look for inspiration all around. Over the Christmas holiday break I took a day trip to L.A. to visit the Getty Center. The crisp, clear day was filled with paintings, sculpture, gardens, food, drink and well…inspiration. The Getty Center really does make a perfect day trip.
